Overview

The Instagram channel connects your ChatSpark AI agent to your Instagram DM inbox. When someone sends your Instagram account a direct message, your agent replies automatically using your training data. All conversations sync to your ChatSpark dashboard.

Instagram is especially effective for e-commerce businesses and visual brands where customers frequently reach out about products, pricing, and order details after seeing a post or story.

Plan Requirement
The Instagram channel is available on Pro and Enterprise plans only. Upgrade your plan from Settings before starting this setup.

Prerequisites

Instagram has two hard prerequisites that are different from other channels. Both must be completed inside the Instagram and Facebook apps before you start the ChatSpark setup. Skipping either one will cause the connection to fail.

Instagram Professional Account

Your Instagram account must be a Professional account (Business or Creator type). Personal Instagram accounts cannot connect to the Instagram Messaging API that ChatSpark uses.

To switch your account to a Professional account:

  1. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile
  2. Tap the menu in the top right, then go to Settings and privacy
  3. Tap Account type and tools
  4. Tap Switch to professional account and follow the prompts
  5. Choose Business or Creator based on your use case

Instagram Account Linked to a Facebook Page

Your Instagram Professional account must be linked to a Facebook Page before you can connect it to ChatSpark. This is a Meta requirement for all third-party Instagram integrations.

To link your Instagram account to a Facebook Page:

  1. Open the Instagram app and go to your profile settings
  2. Tap Account, then Linked accounts
  3. Tap Facebook and follow the prompts to connect to a Page
  4. Make sure you select an actual Facebook Page, not a personal profile

You must be an admin of the Facebook Page you link to.

Personal Facebook Account with Admin Access

The connection process uses a Meta OAuth popup. You will log in during this popup with your personal Facebook account, not a business email address. That personal account must have admin access to the Facebook Page linked to your Instagram account.

Use Your Personal Facebook Account
When the Connect popup appears, log in with the personal Facebook account that is an admin of the Facebook Page connected to your Instagram. Do not use a business or work email address. This is the most common connection failure.

Setup Instructions

Step 1: Create Your Agent

  1. Go to AI Agents in your ChatSpark dashboard
  2. Click Create Agent
  3. In the Settings tab, find the AI Agent Type dropdown
  4. Select Instagram
  5. Fill in your agent name, personality, and any other settings you want to configure

Step 2: Connect Your Instagram Account

  1. Scroll down in the Settings tab to find the Instagram Integration section
  2. Click Connect with Instagram
  3. A Meta OAuth popup will open using Instagram's guided onboarding flow. Log in with your personal Facebook account that is an admin of the linked Facebook Page
  4. Follow all the prompts in the popup. Meta will walk you through confirming your Instagram account and the Facebook Page it is linked to. Do not dismiss the popup early
  5. Approve the permissions Meta requests, then close the popup when prompted
About the Onboarding Popup
Instagram uses a guided setup flow that looks slightly different from the standard Facebook login popup. Follow each screen in order. If you see a step asking you to confirm your Instagram account or select a Page, complete it before moving forward.
Popup Blocked?
If the popup does not open, your browser may be blocking it. Allow popups for your ChatSpark dashboard URL and try again.

Step 3: Select Your Instagram Account

  1. After the OAuth popup closes, a Page dropdown will appear showing your connected Instagram account
  2. Select the Instagram account you want the agent to respond on behalf of
Empty Dropdown?
If no accounts appear in the dropdown, one of the prerequisites was not completed. The most common causes are: the Instagram account is not a Professional account, the Instagram account is not linked to a Facebook Page, or the personal Facebook account used to connect is not an admin of the linked Page. Complete all three prerequisites and then reconnect.

Step 4: Configure Trigger Words (Optional)

Trigger words let you set up a basic live agent handoff within Instagram DM conversations. Two fields are available after you select your account.

FieldWhat it doesExample
Trigger WordWhen a customer types this word, the agent pauses and indicates a human will take overlive agent
Trigger Word for ExitWhen your team types this word, the conversation returns to the AI agentexit

Both fields are optional. You can add multiple trigger words using the add button in each field. If you do not use live agent handoff, leave these empty.

Step 5: Train and Save

  1. Add training data on the Training tab so your agent knows how to respond
  2. Click Save to activate the agent

Your agent is now live on Instagram DMs. Send a direct message to your Instagram account to test it.

How It Works

When a customer sends a direct message to your Instagram account, Meta forwards it to ChatSpark through the Instagram Messaging API. ChatSpark processes the message through your agent and sends the response back. The customer sees the reply in their Instagram DMs.

ChatSpark handles webhook registration automatically. You do not need to configure anything in the Facebook Developer Portal.

Troubleshooting

Connection fails with an account type error

Your Instagram account is likely still a personal account. Switch it to a Professional account in the Instagram app under Settings and privacy → Account type and tools, then try connecting again.

No account appears in the dropdown after connecting

Check all three prerequisites. The Instagram account must be Professional and linked to a Facebook Page, and the personal Facebook account used to connect must be an admin of that Page. Fix whichever is missing and then reconnect.

Popup shows an error or closes without completing

The guided Instagram onboarding popup requires you to complete each step before closing. If you dismissed it early, click Connect with Instagram again and follow all the prompts through to the end.

Agent connected but not responding to DMs

Confirm your agent has training data added and has been saved. Also check that Instagram DM access is enabled on your account. Some newly created Professional accounts have DM access restricted by default.

Instagram and E-commerce
For product-focused businesses, make sure your training data includes your product names, prices, and shipping details. Instagram customers frequently ask about specific items they saw in a post or story, and a well-trained agent can answer those questions instantly.
