The Instagram channel connects your ChatSpark AI agent to your Instagram DM inbox. When someone sends your Instagram account a direct message, your agent replies automatically using your training data. All conversations sync to your ChatSpark dashboard.
Instagram is especially effective for e-commerce businesses and visual brands where customers frequently reach out about products, pricing, and order details after seeing a post or story.
Instagram has two hard prerequisites that are different from other channels. Both must be completed inside the Instagram and Facebook apps before you start the ChatSpark setup. Skipping either one will cause the connection to fail.
Your Instagram account must be a Professional account (Business or Creator type). Personal Instagram accounts cannot connect to the Instagram Messaging API that ChatSpark uses.
To switch your account to a Professional account:
Your Instagram Professional account must be linked to a Facebook Page before you can connect it to ChatSpark. This is a Meta requirement for all third-party Instagram integrations.
To link your Instagram account to a Facebook Page:
You must be an admin of the Facebook Page you link to.
The connection process uses a Meta OAuth popup. You will log in during this popup with your personal Facebook account, not a business email address. That personal account must have admin access to the Facebook Page linked to your Instagram account.
Trigger words let you set up a basic live agent handoff within Instagram DM conversations. Two fields are available after you select your account.
| Field | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Trigger Word | When a customer types this word, the agent pauses and indicates a human will take over | live agent |
| Trigger Word for Exit | When your team types this word, the conversation returns to the AI agent | exit |
Both fields are optional. You can add multiple trigger words using the add button in each field. If you do not use live agent handoff, leave these empty.
Your agent is now live on Instagram DMs. Send a direct message to your Instagram account to test it.
When a customer sends a direct message to your Instagram account, Meta forwards it to ChatSpark through the Instagram Messaging API. ChatSpark processes the message through your agent and sends the response back. The customer sees the reply in their Instagram DMs.
ChatSpark handles webhook registration automatically. You do not need to configure anything in the Facebook Developer Portal.
Your Instagram account is likely still a personal account. Switch it to a Professional account in the Instagram app under Settings and privacy → Account type and tools, then try connecting again.
Check all three prerequisites. The Instagram account must be Professional and linked to a Facebook Page, and the personal Facebook account used to connect must be an admin of that Page. Fix whichever is missing and then reconnect.
The guided Instagram onboarding popup requires you to complete each step before closing. If you dismissed it early, click Connect with Instagram again and follow all the prompts through to the end.
Confirm your agent has training data added and has been saved. Also check that Instagram DM access is enabled on your account. Some newly created Professional accounts have DM access restricted by default.
